A business's position comes from its real Google rating and its real Google review count, combined so a strong rating backed by real evidence counts for more than a strong rating on its own, and a large review count on its own does not automatically win.

## Why not just sort by star rating

If we ranked purely by rating, a business with one perfect review would outrank a business with a thousand genuinely happy customers. A single five star review and a thousand five star reviews are not the same kind of evidence, even though they can produce the same average.

## Why not just sort by review count either

The opposite mistake is sorting by review count alone. Under that method, whichever business has been open longest, has the most locations, or spends the most on marketing tends to win, regardless of how customers actually rate the experience. A 3,000-review business at 4.6 stars would always outrank a 200-review business at 5.0 stars, no matter how much better that second business's customers say the experience was.

## What we actually do

**First, a thin rating is pulled toward a realistic average, in proportion to how little evidence backs it up.** A business with only a handful of reviews has not given us much information yet, so we treat its rating cautiously, nudging it toward the typical rating for its own category rather than taking it completely at face value. A business with a substantial review history has given us a lot of information, so its own rating is trusted almost entirely as is. This is why review volume matters most for a new or thin listing, and matters least for an established one. It means a brand new listing with two five star reviews does not leap to the top of a category, and a business that has earned hundreds of genuine five star reviews is not held back just because it is not a large chain.

**Second, review count matters, but only up to a point, and only as a tiebreaker.** Once a business has accumulated a solid base of real reviews, somewhere in the range of a few hundred, additional reviews stop changing its position in any meaningful way. A business with 500 reviews and a business with 300,000 reviews, at the same adjusted rating, score essentially the same on volume. What separates two businesses with the same adjusted rating is a small nudge based on volume, used only to break close ties. It is deliberately weak: checked against a real 7,108-listing sample, it never once reversed the order of two listings whose adjusted ratings genuinely differed, only settled ties between listings that were already effectively even.

**Third, exact ties break the same way every time.** When two listings land on the identical adjusted score, the one whose business name comes first alphabetically sorts first. This exists so re-running the ranking never silently reshuffles two listings that are, by every measure this page describes, equally ranked.

The result: an independent shop with two hundred honest reviews at 5.0 stars can rank above a location with three thousand reviews at 4.6 stars, because the independent shop's rating is both higher and well supported, and once review volume passes the point where it stops being new information, it stops being an advantage.

## What this means for independent businesses versus chains

The ranking does not know, and does not ask, whether a business is independently owned or part of a chain. It has no field for that and does not look it up. The baseline uses rating and review volume, and nothing else. In practice this means an independent business with a strong, well supported rating is not at a structural disadvantage against a multi-location chain that has simply existed longer and served more customers. It also means a chain location with a genuinely excellent, well supported rating still ranks near the top, exactly as it should. Nothing about this method rewards or penalizes a business for its size.

## The Independent badge

Separately from the ranking above, some listings carry a small "Independent · Locally Owned" badge on their profile page and on their card in a category list. The badge means we found clear evidence that the business is an independent brand with three or fewer locations, all in a single metro area, with no franchise affiliation. A business with four to ten locations, or with locations spread across more than one metro area in the same state, is independently owned but does not carry this particular badge; a business that is part of a larger regional or national brand, or matches a known franchise, does not carry it either.

The badge is detected, not self-reported. We look at how many places a business operates, how many metro areas those places sit in, whether the name matches a list of known franchise and chain brands, and, when a business's own count is ambiguous, corroborating evidence like whether its website and phone number are shared with other locations under a different name. When the evidence clearly and consistently supports "independent," the badge shows. When it does not, or when the evidence is mixed, the badge simply does not show. We do not label any business as a chain, a franchise, or "not independent" anywhere on the site: the badge is only ever awarded, never withheld as a public statement about a business. A listing with no badge may well be independently owned; it may just not have cleared the bar for evidence we require before saying so.

The badge does not change a listing's position. It is a label, shown or not shown, on a page whose order follows the rating and review-volume method described here. Where useful, a category page also offers an "independents only" view of that same order, and, when the top-ranked business on a page is not independent, a small "Top Independent" panel pointing to the highest-ranked one that is - both are different ways of looking at the same list, not a different list.

If you believe a business's classification is wrong - badge shown when it should not be, or missing when it should show - there is a "Think this classification is wrong?" link on the badge area of that business's profile page, and claimed owners can also reach it from their back office. Tell us what you believe the right classification is and why; a person reviews it. Nothing about a classification affects the ranking itself, so an appeal never changes where a business sits, only whether this one badge is shown.

## How location works here

Each Top Rated city runs as its own site - Dallas Top Rated only ranks and lists businesses that actually serve the Dallas area. There is no single search box that spans every metro we cover: picking your city (from the directory at topratedcities.com, or a link from a nearby city's site) is how you tell us where you are, in place of a "near me" search. A business shows up here because it serves this area, not because of where you happened to be standing when you searched.

Two of our city names are shared by more than one real metro area - Greenville (South Carolina and North Carolina) and Charleston (South Carolina and West Virginia). Each has its own short page to pick the right one before you land on either city's real listings, rather than guessing. Every other city name in our network maps to exactly one metro, so this only comes up for those two.

## Unrated listings

A small number of listings do not yet have a Google rating, most often because the business is new, operates without a public storefront, or does not yet have a Google Business Profile under its current name. These are shown as local business listings without a star rating. We never invent a rating for a listing that does not have one, and an unrated listing is never ranked against, or placed ahead of, a rated one using a made-up number - it simply is not part of the ranked order.

## Perfect ratings

We do not use this method to flag or penalize any business for holding a perfect rating. A perfect rating at real volume is unusual enough that it can be worth a second look internally, but that check is not part of the score above and never lowers a business's rank. Many perfectly legitimate businesses, especially newer ones or ones in categories where customers are commonly asked for a review, genuinely earn this.

## Claiming your listing

Claiming a listing is free and stays free. Once a claim passes our ownership verification, you can correct and complete what we show about your business - hours, photos, description, service area, and the Google profile we match your reviews to. Claiming does not change your rank. Position comes only from your real Google rating and review count, the same for a claimed and an unclaimed listing. If your Google profile shows a different rating or review count than we do, send us the profile link from your back office or through Maya, and once we verify it the numbers and the ranking update. Early claimants receive Premium free after confirmation, a $297 value. Premium changes how a listing looks on the page. It never changes where the listing ranks; there is no version of this ranking that can be bought.

## What we do not use yet

We do not currently factor in how recently a business earned its reviews, or how consistent its reviews are over time. The rating and review-count data we receive today does not include a timestamp or a full breakdown for every individual review. If that changes, recency and consistency are reasonable things to add later. Until then we are not guessing at what we cannot see.

## Quality floor and refresh

A business must hold at least a 4.0 rating with 15 or more reviews to be listed at all. Ratings change, so rankings do too; this page's ranking data was last refreshed October 2026.

## No pay-to-play

Rankings cannot be bought. Sponsored placements, when present, are clearly labeled Featured and sit outside the earned order beneath them - they never change where any other listing ranks. The same is true of the endorsements other businesses can leave on a listing's page ("What other businesses say"): they are shown for context only and never factor into rankings or star ratings.

## If you want to close the gap

If you want help earning more reviews, answering the phone faster, or being reachable after hours - the things that genuinely move this ranking - that is what [After Hours AI](https://afterhai.com/) and our other service partners do. It is a paid service, and it changes what you can earn, never what we rank.
